BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2's Izan Guevara rode a faultless race in today's Grand Prix of Japan to take a crucial back-to-back victory and 25 points for the championship. The result has cut the gap to the championship leader to 10.5 points with six rounds remaining, cementing the Spaniard's status as a championship title contender.

Dark clouds covered the starting grid and the tension was palpable as the Moto2 championship fight was about to continue. Guevara started from pole for the fourth time this season. Dramatically, championship leader by 35.5 points Manuel Gonzalez stalled his bike on the grid and as a consequence had to start from pit lane. Meanwhile Guevara took the holeshot. It was a matter of staying focused over the 19 laps contest for the number 28. He kept the chasing Tony Arbolino and Filip Salač at bay for almost the entirety of the race, withstanding the pressure. Arbolino put in one manoeuvre in Turn 9 with three laps to go, but Guevara anticipated the move and retaliated immediately to go on and take the race victory by 0.419s.

Guevara remains second in the championship standings with 235 points and has cut the deficit to the series leader to 10.5 points. Teammate Alberto Ferrández sits in 21st overall with 17.5 points, while the BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2 team holds third place in the team standings with 252.5 points.

The Moto2 paddock will now travel straight to the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit for next week's Grand Prix of Indonesia, taking place from 9-11 October.

"After such a perfect race, everything I could say is probably exactly what everyone has already seen. So, first of all, congratulations to our incredible rider and to our fantastic team.

"But I would like to share a little story about Izan. On Friday morning, we had a technical problem with a broken radiator, which unfortunately can happen. The chief technician told us that even if the mechanics managed to repair the bike in time, we might not be able to get back out on track. Izan remained completely calm, as if nothing had happened.

"That calmness comes from his confidence in his speed, in the bike – which was already working very well after just three or four laps in the first session – and, above all, in the team. When a rider has that level of trust, it allows everyone to work really well together. I think that also explains the composure and maturity he showed today in managing a race which we knew was more important than usual."

"Incredible! It has been a really good weekend. Yesterday we took pole and today we turned it into another victory. We won in Austria and now here in Japan with very good pace in both races, so I'm extremely proud. To win in Japan and be part of a Japanese team makes it even more special. The Yamaha President, Shitara-san, was here enjoying the races today, so I would also like to dedicate this victory to him and to everyone at Yamaha for the great work they are doing. I'm really proud of this weekend.

"The race was really good, and I enjoyed it a lot. I tried to manage the pressure from Tony [Arbolino] behind me and take care of the tyres so I could be strong at the end of the race. That was the key to bringing home the victory and making it two wins in a row.

"At the start, when Manu's bike stopped, I saw that the lights were not going out and then I noticed the yellow flag and saw that it was Manu. It was a strange situation, and obviously I didn't want to make any mistake or lose my focus. I was a little more cautious at the beginning because of that, but then I was able to settle into my rhythm and focus on the race."
